cult op3
For my final cultural opportunity I read the book my Ayn Rand entitled Anthem. In this book miss Rand portrays a man in a world in which no one thinks for or about themselves because everything is ran by unions and no individual is really that important, the only real importance is of the unions as a whole. The man belongs to a street sweepers union, so the goal of his life in this world is to not be an individual but only as an end to the goal of keeping the streets clean. The man did not pick to be in this job he was appointed without having a say in it. The man did not have a name he was simply a number with the title of his union in front of his name. The man being a street sweeper fondles with science, and upon his discovery of electricity, he shows the science union his discovery but they chastise him, so the man exiles himself with the electricity. The book is supposed to symbolize independence of every individual, and how treating people as the end of a job, which is what the unions depicted in the books do, ultimately ends in a ignorant conformist mind set. The book was for sure one of the most unique books I ever read and It certainly brought a new perspective of individual right to me. It is a must read book for anyone who is interested in social philosophy.
